Can you guess what Metallica’s “Garage Days Re-revisited”, Trivium’s “Ember to Inferno” and Pantera’s “Cowboys from Hell” records have in common? A band having fun, a band giving it all out and a great and present bass guitar.
This is what you will get when listening to “House of Cards” the new EP from the Canadian band Prisoner, formed in 2020 in Alberta by four young men on a mission to make Metal even bigger.
The EP is formed by three songs and just under eleven minutes of playtime which is enough to show how fucking good they are!
First track, ‘Skies are Blackened’, is Thrash Metal at its best: great guitar riffs, pentatonic madness guitar solo, punchy-in-your-face bass guitar, screams, harmonies and brutal drumming.
‘On a Sunday’, their second song, starts with acoustic guitar and more grunge-y styled vocals to explode in what would be considered a power ballad full of little details of quality like guitar fills, vocal harmonies and stupidly good singing.
‘House of Cards’, the last one, is a banger that will make you jump and sing in front of the stage. Special mention to the powerful and precise use of the double kick on the drums and the two face-melting guitar solos, perfectly played, not a single note short, not a single note long and full of musicality. Also, those woah-woah are great and serve the song perfectly.
The good? Production is great and clear, very surprising for such a young band. Three songs with three very different styles that work together as a whole showing all their versatility. Stellar musicianship and despite how young and skilled they are, not overplayed.
The bad? Come on! Only eleven minutes and three songs?
The ugly? Getting a record deal is not easy and while many others are doing the same thing once and again, this guys here are creating new music that is better than most new bands and they will probably won’t get a deal in a long time unless we help them get the exposure they need to have some numbers to get a deal so… Share! Listen! And buy their EP! They absolutely deserve a nice deal, a full record at a professional studio and a tour. I need to see them touring Europe!
So much potential guys! Oh… the future is not blackened indeed!
Hasta la vista, Ever-Metallers!
