EMQs With SUPER MONSTER PARTY

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with USA Video Game inspired Metallers, Super Monster Party. Huge thanks to their Singer/Songwriter, Rei Sega, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Rei Sega, A.K.A. Player One. I write, sing and co-produce all our songs. The band started as something to kill the time when Covid started and it just snowballed from there. I wanted to mix the love I have of video games and Metal.

How did you come up with your band name?

So originally, I was going to call the band, “Monster Party”, after the video game. However I saw there was already a band using that name so I added the word “Super” as in Super Nintendo, in front of the name. Thus, you get Super Monster Party.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

I am from the swamps of South Florida. Growing up we had a great underground metal scene. Unfortunately not so much these days.

What is your latest release?

Our latest release is our new album “Rage Quit” which features 6 original songs and also 6 rerecorded and reimagined versions of previous releases.

Who have been your greatest influences?

My greatest musician influences growing up have to be The Misfits and Rhapsody. When you hear an SMP record, you can hear the blending of melodic punk and symphonic epicness.

What first got you into music?

My cousin let me hear “Appetite for Destruction” for the first time and the rest was history. I was completely blown away and it’s still one of my favourite albums to this day.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

So many great bands. But If I had to pick just 3 I’d say it would be Dragonforce, Slaughter to Prevail and Iron Maiden.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

We would absolutely love to play at Hellfest or Wacken one day.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

A little doll in my likeness made from their hair. I guess it’s the thought that counts right?

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Thank you for the support and the love. They always support us by buying our merch or coming to our shows. We are eternally grateful.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Michael Jackson, regardless of what you think about him. There’s no denying he was one of the greatest performers of all time.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I love performing in front of audiences. I love the rush you get being on stage and moving a crowd. What I hate the most is the travelling aspect of it. Hours and hours sitting down are horrible on your back.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

I would love for streaming services to provide better cuts to the artists. I feel a lot of us are cut short of what we deserve.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Top 3 would be. Rhapsody – “Symphony of Enchanted Lands”, The Misfits – “Earth A.D” and Guns and Roses – “Appetite for Destruction”.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

I think they all have their own place in music. I personally grew up with cassette tapes and eventually CDs. I think there’s something unique about owning something and holding it in your physical hands. You can’t do that with downloads.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

To date, I’d have to say playing the Loud as Hell Open Air in Drumheller, Alberta Canada. That audience was something else.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Most likely making art or producing music. The arts are in my blood.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

If it didn’t matter if they were alive or dead, it would have to be Clive Barker, Michael Jackson, Prince, Jim Carrey and Frank Sinatra.

What’s next for the band?

We have the release of our new album “Rage Quit” on Nov 11th and then we will be following up with a few more music videos with some epic cameo surprises.

What Social Media / Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

We are on instragram @supermonsterparty. We are also on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61561209445950&_rdr

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?

Batch all the way!
