EMQs with Brake Loose
EMQs with Brake Loose
Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Irish Rockers, Brake Loose. Huge thanks to their frontman, Alex, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
Hi, my name is Alejandro Murillo, some people call me Alex. I play a little bit of guitar and piano, and I’m the frontman, vocalist/lead singer-songwriter of Irish rock band Brake Loose. So, Brake Loose was formed and created by me (frontman Alex Murillo) in 2019. I reformed the band in 2021 after the pandemic, and we’ve been hitting up the Irish music scene with a blast of raw live rock ‘n’ roll since our first sold-out show in the Workmans Club in Dublin in November 2021.
How did you come up with your band name?
I used to race motocross back home in Caracas, Venezuela. So the name came due to emotional involvement with the sport and my 2009 Suzuki RMZ 450f having the worst brakes you could ever imagine.
What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?
We are a band from Dublin, Ireland. The Metal/Rock music scene here is fantastic, there is so much undiscovered talent. Honestly, what we need is the help and support from the main booking agencies like MCD & Aiken that run the game here. We need them to help us boost the overall scene with more awareness, more local shows, festivals (as there is no proper Rock festival in Ireland at the moment), more local promotions of shows, and for them to put Irish Rock and Metal bands first when other international acts come over.
What is your latest release?
“Kiss Me Bye Bye”.
Who have been your greatest influences?
The Doors, Elvis Presley, The Cult, Danzig, Billy Idol, Type O Negative, and Velvet Revolver.
What first got you into music?
Unconsciously, my mom and dad playing all of their records at home since I was born. From Elton John to Fleetwood Mac, John Coltrane, Bee Gees. Consciously – early 2000’s MTV and seeing Motocross videos as a kid that featured music from Rock and Metal bands I love.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Maneskin, but they are on hiatus. Funny things that loads of people compare us to them. I would love to collaborate with either White Lies or Bad Nerves, those guys are on fire.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Rock in Rio, in Brazil, or Louder Than Life in Kentucky, US. These are the biggest Rock music festivals in the world.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
A tongue piercing.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Don’t live a life you don’t believe in.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Jim Morrison.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
Performing is what I enjoy the most. I’m not a fan of admin stuff, like booking shows, etc.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
This is a very broad and difficult question. At the moment in our careers, we feel there are not enough or there is a lack of booking agents, so there you go.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
“The Doors”, The Doors debut album.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
Vinyl.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
Maid Of Stone Festival – 2024 Edition.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
I’d still be back home racing motocross.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Arthur Rimbaud, Jack Keruoac, Jim Morrison, and Jiddu Krishnamurti.
What’s next for the band?
Our debut EP, “Frenetic”, is out 30th May. We’ve summer gigs and festivals, here in Ireland. Then we are going to Helsinski and Tallinn this summer, and the release of our debut album and tour dates for the UK to be announced.
As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll, or a Tea Cake?
All of the above!
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Thanks so much for your support, we can’t wait for you to hear our new EP! See you down the front.
