EMQ’s With DOLL

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Canadian Punk rock/ Grunge band, Doll. Huge thanks to their Guitarist/ Vocalist, Christina Kasper, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Hey, I’m Christina Kasper, and I play guitar and sing in the band Doll.

After a lengthy hiatus, we announced our return with “Better Days, Different Times”, a new EP set for release on July 18th, 2025.

The band started in early 2007, when Christina Kasper and Pete Kasper were reminiscing about the Riot Grrrl era.

In 2009, Doll released their first album, “Inside The Dollhouse”. A video was also filmed for “Daddy’s Little Girl”, our first single, which played on MuchMusic and MusiquePlus. A second video was created for their second single, “Sally Lost Her Shoelaces”.

In 2011, we released our second album, “The Ragdoll Diaries”. Two singles/videos came out of this: “FMO” and “Youth of Today, Hope for Tomorrow”. Doll has acted as the opening band for Lacuna Coil,[8] Danko Jones, Spinnerette, Protest the Hero, Band of Skulls, Anvil, Halestorm, SNFU, Hanzel Und Gretyl, Civet, The Creepshow and Die Mannequin.

In 2013, the band released a video for their single “Plastic Lies.”

How did you come up with your band name?

We were looking for something short, easy to remember, but also an ode to the riot grrrl movement.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

We’re from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The Metal and Rock scene is really solid here. We actually organize most Metal shows in the area with our company Chord Productions.

What is your latest release?

“Better Days, Different Times”, a new EP is set for release on July 18th, 2025. The announcement comes alongside the premiere of our first single, a unique take on Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water”.

Who have been your greatest influences?

For me personally, bands like Hole, Garbage, and Veruca Salt made me realize that as a woman you could have a place in rock. For Pete, he is influenced by Sonic Youth and Classic Rock bands like Alice Cooper.

What first got you into music?

For me, I started playing piano when I was 7 and stuck with playing a different instrument year over year. I just loved listening to music. I remember staying in my room all day waiting for songs to come out on the radio so I could record and make mix tapes.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Hmm good question. Probably Poppy. She has such a versatile voice and judging by the bands she covers (like Jack off Jill, Kittie) , I think we’d get along really well.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

I always wanted to go to Hellfest in France. The lineup is always insane and really varied musically.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Nothing comes to mind, please send us stuff lol!

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Thousands of Manitobans have been displaced as wildfires continue to threaten communities across the province. The Governments of Canada and Manitoba are matching donations. Canadians wishing to make a financial donation to help those impacted by wildfires in Manitoba or Saskatchewan can do so online at www.redcross.ca or by calling 1-800-418-1111.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Kurt Cobain for sure!

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

The creative process – you never know where it will go, especially when writing as a group. Hate, I would have to say that it is virtually impossible to make a living off of it anymore.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Right now is a really financially challenging time for indie bands, venues, labels, and promoters. The internet has definitely devalued music’s worth. I think as a society, we need to invest in it. Government grants, supporting local bands on a regular basis, are needed for a scene to thrive.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Hole – “Live Through This”

Lacuna Coil – “Unleashed Memories”

L7 – “Bricks are heavy”

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

I have a pretty big collection of vinyl, but you can’t beat the convenience of Spotify.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

Playing with Halestorm at the Mod Club in Toronto.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Event management, marketing and communications.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Courtney Love, Poppy, Lizzy Hale, Cristina Scabbia, Tommy Wiseau.

What’s next for the band?

Our album comes out July 18thhttps://doll.bandcamp.com/

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll, or a Tea Cake?

Tea Cake?
