No Murder No Moustache is a Netherlands based band that, besides its strange name, on “As Everything Else Decays” mixes simple (Post) Punk Rock with ancient Celtic melodies. That sonority is something that I’ve never heard before, I tell you.
I used to find a musical reference to guide my thoughts before writing a review and, in this case, my mind took me right to New Model Army, Midnight Oil and Green Day songs. It sounded to me like NMNM’s focus is on the song’s lyrics, and it felt like Bob Dylan and his non-stop ‘way-too-much’ lyrics. Of course, in the content, it is not possible to compare the density of Dylan’s songs with the simple and naïve lyrics provided on “As Everything Else Decay”. What I meant is that both artists are songwriters who open their thoughts while they sing. Cancioneros, as we say here right down the world, all the way to South America – “A moment of reflection / I am looking back, right / Since I started this bands 5 year have past / … /and you hear songs about beers and shots/ sometimes I have to find/ Trapped inside the world that doesn’t care enough/ it doesn’t give a shit/ – the lyrics don’t have cadence and we don’t hear rhymes between the verses and also no chorus to sing along to.
Songs like ‘Celtic Skies’ are the ones that bring Old Celtic good vibes into the mix. I really love those Celtic melodies that I used to listen to while cooking on a Sunday morning, because it inspires me to season with summer flavours guided by melodies in a cheerful vibe. I don’t think it would be possible to cook while listening to satanic Black Metal music, anyway.
And does it work in the process? Well, I am a good cook, so it is up to me to make the food good for taste buds and meaningful ritualistic celebrations. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t eat the meal offered by NMNM, because it tasted to me like the songs aren’t cooked enough for the audience. But, at least, on “As Everything Else Decays” NMNM delivers songs to listen to at a barbecue with lots of beer. I am a vegan, and I quit drinking for a long time, if you know what I mean.
Much to my surprise the Spotify’s algorithms, after playing the songs on “As Everything Else Decays” continue offering songs of bands which play the same Celtic Poppy Punk to NMNM (Mr. Irish Bastards, Shanghai Treason). And I felt frustrated that NMNM isn’t alone in this musical choice. Actually, Spotify’s algorithm took me to a sea of bands that are very alike NMNM, kind of like fast food restaurants that offer the same meals as their competitors, only changing the names of the sandwiches, which are of dubious quality.
