EMQ’s With Patric Of BUILT FOR THE FUTURE
What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
Patric Farrell. Kenny Bissett and I are Built for the Future. We are a crossover prog band from San Antonio, Texas. We are releasing our 4th album, 2084 Empire, and are very excited. Our other three albums have been critical successes, but this one is really getting a strong reaction.
How did you come up with your band name?
When Kenny and I were thinking of starting a project, I wanted a name that would get him interested. I knew that he loved the band The Fixx. So I went through every single song title hoping to find a suitable band name. I found two: SENSE THE ADVENTURE and BUILT FOR THE FUTURE.
Since he and I met in the 80s, and it was destined to be a band now, I picked B4TF!
What Country / Region are you from, and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?
San Antonio, Texas. USA. Interestingly, we are not metal. We are more crossover prog/alternative. However, in SA, metal is the prevalent genre for rock bands. Many metal bands all around!
What is your latest release?
2084 EMPIRE double album.
Who have been your greatest influences?
Well, my top few would be Rush, Tears for Fears, and Pink Floyd (concepts)… for this album!
What first got you into music?
THE BEATLES. I bought the Blue and Red collections in 78, and those songs all blew my mind. Found my way to Rush(Farewell to Kings) and Yes(Tales from Topographic Oceans) and from there on it was prog.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
This is a weird answer. But I don’t really dream of collaborating. We don’t have ‘star’ guests. There is something about our little universe that I like to keep for us. But, If you were to press me for someone I would say Phideaux!
If you could play at any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
PROGSTOCK! I go almost every year. Love it. We are playing PROG ON THE RANCH next spring, and we hope to get into Progstock soon after. Just love the whole group that runs it, great folks show up for it. And most of all, everyone LISTENS to the music!
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Socks. From THEIR band. Thank you!
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Thank you for your ears! Nothing makes us feel like we feel when someone loves our music.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Easy answer: Chris Squire. My favorite musician of all time.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
MOST: The feeling you get when you create something, and it moves you to the core.
HATE: nothing really. I am so grateful to be able to play and create music.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
I wish not everything were algorithm-based. Driven by zeros and ones. Good stuff gets lost due to how these things shuffle the deck.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
So many. Here are three: Abbey Road/Elemental (Tears for Fears)/Permanent Waves
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CDs, or Downloads?
Well, I still like CD’s but nowhere to play them. So I am grateful for high-quality digital music.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
VoyagerFest In Austin, Texas. Prog festival. We opened the event, and the room was packed, and when we kicked in, we had everyone glued to us!
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Likely drawing! I was in to illustrating when I was young, I was pretty good. Until I picked up a guitar!
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Well..another weird answer..because I don’t really wish to meet my heroes, to me its not a great idea! BUT to play along: Chris Squire, Geddy Lee, Paul McCartney, Curt Smith, and Nick Beggs. WE all just talk about the power and history of the bass guitar!!
What’s next for the band?
We are going to play shows in our city at the end of the year. And then play PROG ON THE RANCH in the spring of 27. We are going to do an album preview of our new album(this one) at PROGSTOCK in OCTOBER. And then we will begin working on our next album…with a new theme/concept.
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Thank you for taking the time to listen and support. We truly appreciate it!
