“Thursday is the new Friday” – I am sure someone said this once. Anyway, this Thursday evening had that Friday feeling. I was on my way to The Key Club to see KING 810. I remember when I first heard them with ‘Fat Around The Heart’ and then saw them play with Slipknot on an Arena tour. So I walked through Leeds to see them at a much smaller venue than before and I could not wait to see what the atmosphere was going to be like!

As I descended the stairs I could hear TEN56 playing, unfortunately I only managed to catch half of the last song but the crowd seemed to really dig them. I went to the bar, grabbed a beer and stood in my usual place at shows, next to the sound desk.

KING 810 came onto the stage with people applauding and cheering. David Gunn wore dungarees and had that crazy look in his eye that people know and love. He grabbed the microphone and away they went, opening the set with ‘Brains On The Asphalt’. It was a strong starter, the audience were captivated at the show they put on. Gunn commanded the crowd with his movements and unique voice, sounding like an unhinged Bear. As if the crowd had not taken enough of a beating from the first song, King 810 jumped right into ‘Alpha & Omega’. Other stand out songs were ‘Fat Around The Heart’ and ‘Kill Em All’. Unfortunately a lot of the other songs were not recognisable, through no fault of the band. The mix from the sound desk was bass heavy with no clarity, and no guitars could be heard. That been said, the energy of the band carried the band through

Now, I had never heard of Alpha Wolf before tonight. I had no expectations, I went to see KING810, but boy am I glad I stayed around!

I was a little taken aback by the choice of intro music, ‘Tribute’ by Tenacious D, but it was sheer genius as it got the crowd singing along. Thankfully the guitars had much more clarity here, but the low end was still over powering. Now to put this into context, I am a bass player and I am complaining there was too much bass… Let that sink in.

The singer from Alpha Wolf owned the stage and the crowd for the full set, getting the crowd involved with every song. The majority of the songs were brutally heavy but pop music catchy and you could tell they have really honed their sound and know what they are about.

As I said, I went into this not knowing them, but I came out a fan and I will definitely be watching the career of this band. I am sure big things are in the future for them.
