EMQs With Steamgenerator

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with German Heavy/ Doom Metallers, Steamgenerator. Huge thanks to their drummer, Christian, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Hello, my Name is Christian, I’m the Drummer from Steamgenerator. The band consists of Marcus Milbrandt (guitar), Tobias Gloge (bass), Oliver Korsten (keyboards), Cesare Piseddu (vocals) and me, Christian Steffenhagen (Drums). Marcus and I have been playing together in regional bands since the early 90s, primarily with the Doom band Grief Of God. The passion for slow, heavy riffs and dark melodies has always been present in us, and so we began writing new material and founding Steamgenerator around 2015.

How did you come up with your band name?

We wanted a band name that would be associated with energy and strength. So we came up with Steamgenerator. Only one word that fits and sounds great.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

We come from the city of Wolfsburg, which is located in northern Germany. We have a small but fanatical Metal Scene with a few interesting bands there. The most well-known bands that originated in Wolfsburg are Protector, Heaven’s Gate and German Metal heroes from the early 80s, Black Tears.

What is your latest release?

Our latest release is called “Hopeless Romantic”. The album was released in March 2026 and was originally released as a CD through the fine Berlin label Metalloscope Music. The work originally appeared in 2023,but was previously only available as CDR at the band’s concerts, and thus only accessible to a small circle. This new edition is all the more welcome, as it makes the material more widely available. As a bonus, the CD also includes the complete debut EP “Black As Coal” from 2019 providing a comprehensive insight into the band’s development.

Who have been your greatest influences?

Our greatest influences are classic Doom bands like Trouble, Black Sabbath, Pentagram and Cathedral, but I like the music of bands like Joy Division or Killing Joke also very much.

What first got you into music?

I’ve been a huge Kiss fan since I was 6 years old, which made me want to make music myself. I was electrified when I looked at their photos. And when I first saw Cozy Powell on TV, I really wanted to become a drummer. He played with such power and looked so cool behind his drums that I started saving my money and bought my first drum set.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

That’s an interesting question, I think collaborating with Bilinda Butcher from My Bloody Valentine would be a good choice to achieve a wonderful result.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

I think I’d love to play at Roadburn, because it just brings together the most intresting and innovative bands. The audience is very knowledgeable, and an invitation there would make me very proud.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

I’ve never actually received anything from a fan, but maybe something extraordinary will come in the future.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Buy physical albums and support underground concerts.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Peter Steele and Ian Curtis.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I don’t really hate anything about being a musician. What isn’t so pleasant is waiting at a concert until you can finally go on stage to play. Transporting equipment is also a not-so-pleasant part of a musician’s life, but it’s part of the game.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Streaming services have largely taken away the chance for musicians to earn a decent income from their music. Nowadays, money is mainly made from concerts, which unfortunately means that concerts are becoming more and more expensive. I would have tried to get streaming services to pay the creators of music appropriately.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

That’s a tough question, but I’d say that Kiss – “Music From The Elder” is my absolute favorite album.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CDs or Downloads?

I still think the CD is the best. I especially like remastered classics that are enhanced with plenty of bonus material, liner notes, and photos. But I also love vinyl and I still buy a lot of LPs. I don’t use streaming or downloads, because that’s not my cup of tea. I also have cassettes, but they’re dispensable for me and I can’t quite understand the revival of them.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

We played at the Burning Pants Festival in the summer of 2025. That was a lot of fun and a great experience for us, as the treatment by the organizer, technicians, security, and the whole team was really excellent.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

The possibilities of being an artist would have also appealed to me. It must be wonderful to be able to express oneself through sculptures, installations, or pictures.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Paul Stanley, Glenn Danzig, Irvine Welsh, Scott “Wino” Weinrich and Bilinda Butcher.

What’s next for the band?

We are currently working on the follow-up to “Hopeless Romantic” and have some good ideas that we are working on.

There’s a long-standing food-based debate here in the UK. And we’d like your help. So… A Jaffa cake – is it a cake or a biscuit? Discuss!

You guys in the UK have great humor, but I don’t know, I’m not the Cooky Monster.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you Beth for the intresting questions and for your support!
And greetings from Germany!
