EMQ’s With From Ruins
27/07/24
Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Northern Irish Metalcore band, From Ruins. Huge thanks to drummer David Patton for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
My name is David Patton and I play the drums for the Northern Irish metal band ‘From Ruins’.
We formed in the Spring of 2023, released our debut EP ‘Inner Demons’ in October 2023 and have our second EP coming out on the 6th September 2024.
We play a variety of styles of metal, but simple put most people would describe us as metalcore.
How did you come up with your band name?
Our guitarist Neil came up with the name. The band formed out of the remnants of another project, so it felt like an appropriate name for the circumstances.
What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?
We are from County Antrim, Northern Ireland.
Northern Ireland currently has a thriving metal scene, with great fan support. Ever since the lockdown restrictions were lifted a couple of years ago, gigs are frequent and usually close to, if not sold out. It is definitely the best it has been in my lifetime (I am 32 just for some context).
What is your latest release?
Our new EP ‘Poison for Your Soul’ will be available 6th September, and we just released the lead single ‘Until We’re Gone’.
It is accompanied by a music video if anyone fancies checking it out on our YouTube.
Who have been your greatest influences?
Personally, I love a lot of different types of music, but on the metal front some of my favourite bands are Trivium, Megadeth, and Sylosis.
Collectively, we have quite a lot of different influences, which definitely lends to the diverse sound across our songs.
What first got you into music?
The first album I ever bought/got into was Linkin Park – Hybrid Theory in October 2000. Then It was a steady progression through the other rock and metal sub-genres.
It was David Silvera from Korn that inspired me to start playing the drums when I was ten.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
I’d love to have Florestan Durand, from the French Metal band Novelists do a guest solo on one of our future releases. I think his guitar chops are incredible.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Bloodstock festival. I think what Adam and his team have created over the years is really incredible.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Being such a new band, we haven’t actually received any gifts from fans
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
If you enjoyed our first EP, you’ll love what we have coming on the new one. I think we have really stepped it up on all fronts and there should be something there for all Metal fans to enjoy.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
It’s so hard to pick between Vinnie or Dimebag… but if I have to pick, Dimebag. How incredible would it be to see the full lineup back together right now!?!
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
I love working with a group of like-minded guys to create something we all enjoy and connect with. It’s even better when other people find enjoyment in it as well.
In general, I am not a massive fan of social media. Unfortunately it is a necessary tool to promote music today, so I am forced to use my phone a lot more than I’d like.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
Ticketmaster/Live Nations monopoly on the music industry is bad for everyone. Be that fans or musicians. That merger should never have been allowed to go ahead.
Ticket prices are getting out of hand. Plus it is horrible how they can dictate where and when bands can play.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
“Rust In Peace” by Megadeth. I think the album is perfect from start to finish. A masterpiece.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
For sound quality and aesthetics, Vinyl. For everyday use and practicality, downloads.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
We haven’t actually played a gig yet. Our first gig will be this Autumn to support the release of our new EP.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Outside of my family and work, this band takes up the rest of my free time. It is my passion in life, so that is really hard to say.
I’d probably do more sports/fitness to fill the time.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Trey Parker, Michael Palin, Adam D, Michael Starr and Satchel. That should end up being a pretty funny dinner party 🙂
What’s next for the band?
Releasing our new EP and finally taking the band live. In the new year we’ll be aiming to head around Ireland to show off what we can do in the flesh.
What Social Media / Website links do you use to get your music out to people?
All of our links can be found here: https://linktr.ee/fromruins
Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?
I’d say a bap, but each to their own. Some regions of England get way too heated on that topic 🙂
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
I hope that people will give us a chance and check out our new single Until We’re Gone. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by what we can do.
Thank you to Ever Metal for giving artists/bands a platform to be heard. Without organisations like yours it wouldn’t be possible to share our music with a new audience.
