EMQ’s With ENIGMATIC SOUND MACHINES

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Canadian Progressive Rock duo, Enigmatic Sound Machines. Huge thanks to Jeremie Arrobas and Thomas Szirmay for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Jeremie Arrobas and I play mostly keyboards, synthesizers and compose the tracks. I am the lead vocalist as well. Thomas Szirmay supplies backing vocals, lyrics, production, arrangement and direction. We both attended the same secondary school and went to a slew of legendary concerts together (Genesis, Led Zeppelin, Hawkwind and many more…). Jeremie was a founding member of Synthpop bands Men Without Hats and Isinglass, while Thomas is a prolific musicologist /reviewer on a quartet of prog sites (Progarchives, House of Prog, Profil Prog and Prog Rogue).

How did you come up with your band name?

Jeremie Arrobas: I came up with the name, inspired by mystery, noise and robots!

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

We both reside in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, a hotbed of progressive rock since the early 70s.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

Our third full album “Imperfect Silence” and its single ‘In Perfect Silence’ this summer on ProgRock.com Essentials.

Who have been your greatest influences?

Jeremie: Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk, King Crimson, Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, Led Zeppelin.

Thomas: Roxy Music, King Crimson, Ultravox, John Foxx, Tangerine Dream, Strawbs, Oldfield and Hawkwind.

What first got you into music?

Probably the combination of two phenomenon: The Beatles and Woodstock, as it propelled the musical technology to glittering heights (synthesizers, mellotron, amplifiers, pedals etc…)

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician, who would it be?

Robert Fripp, Brian Eno, John Foxx, Robert Reed

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Terra Incognita in nearby Quebec City

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Nothing extravagant

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

BE ENIGMATIC!

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

David Bowie, Mick Karn or John Bonham

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

We both enjoy the creative process, the insanity of inspiration, the never-ending alternatives, production, engineering and videos. The business side can be taxing but we are not newborn.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Better and fairer revenue streams

Name one of your all-time favourite albums.

Jeremie: ‘Dark Side of the Moon’, ‘Man Machine’

Thomas:  I have way too many but Roxy Music – ‘For Your Pleasure’ and Strawbs -’Hero and Heroine’ remain perennial favourites.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CDs or Downloads?

The music within matters the most.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

The next one

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Jeremie: Dog Whisperer

Thomas: Cat Whisperer

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

David Gilmour, Peter Gabriel, Brian Eno, Bryan Ferry, Robert Fripp.

What’s next for the band?

Already working on new material, two tracks are in the bag.

There’s a long-standing food-based debate here in the UK. And we’d like your help. So… A Jaffa cake – is it a cake or a biscuit? Discuss!

We don’t eat cake, because Marie-Antoinette said so…..

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

More future albums, as the well is endless! Be Enigmatic!
