Coma Hole are a band based in Rhode Island (USA) and raised to play Doom Metal at its best, which is what can be heard on “Hand of Severance” – Coma Hole’s new and recently released EP. Even though Coma Hole are connected to Doom Metal’s trivia, the band took a step forward by composing songs that flirt with Melodic Metal here and there, which sounded very pleasant to me, mainly due to Eryka Fir.

And, much to my surprise, some songs on “Hand of Severance”, reminded me of Nirvana (‘In Bloom’) along with Alice In Chains’ trademark ambience, on ‘Rivermouth’. It is also relevant to mention that Coma Hole are a duo – Eryka Fir on Vocals and Bass and Steven Anderson on the Drums. And those musicians are well talented enough to sew the above-mentioned music styles way back to the Doom Metal patterns.

‘Ascendance’ gives us a wonderful guitar solo, highlighted all the way through to melodic lines, which also ride some great psychedelic landscapes, on its own terms.  But don’t get me wrong, because the interaction between Drums and Bass are the engine, present on every song, and mixed high enough to keep the melancholic vibe, with lots of work on the producer’s part to keep it coming into the mix.

Coma Hole certainly took the band to the next level on “Hand of Severance”, paying tribute to Black Sabbath in lots of musical passages, that reminded me of the “Black Sabbath” album, but distilling that sound with the  great vocals lines, sung with richness and assertive vocal techniques, keeping everything on the right place.  I am sorry, Ozzy followers, but Eryka Fir brings several pallets of vocalizing to the mix that please me greatly.
