EMQ’s With Greystone Canyon
EMQ’s With Greystone Canyon
Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Australian Rock/ Metal band, Greystone Canyon. Huge thanks to their Vocalist/ Guitarist, Darren Cherry, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
Greetings, Ever Metal! My name is Darren Cherry, vocals and guitar from the band Greystone Canyon…. The band started around 2016 when I was playing in a Mercyful Fate / King Diamond tribute band and touring Australia. I’d met some really incredible musicians and thought it would be great to put an original band together, mixing our different influences and combining what we liked from rock and metal music.
How did you come up with your band name?
I guess like most bands … we all threw suggestions in and a few were contenders, but Greystone Canyon just stuck and seemed to fit the music, and it also gave us an aesthetic as we all loved the themes and imagery of the old western films.
What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?
We are from Melbourne, Australia, and the scene here is diverse … hard rock, heavy metal, goth, extreme metal… we have gigs happening all the time that represent these genres and also a lot of international bands tour here.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
We have just released a single and music video for Thin Lizzy’s Suicide. It features on our forthcoming album “Something Borrowed…Something New,” which comes out worldwide Dec 5th.
Who have been your greatest influences?
That’s a tough one… collectively we love so many rock and metal artists… Ozzy, Led Zeppelin, Megadeth, Van Halen…. Not an influence but a huge inspiration is the Rick Beato YouTube channel…
What first got you into music?
My father was a professional musician, not a rock or pop star, but a working musician playing dance halls and bars and clubs when I was a child.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Oh wow…. Well, let’s see.. I’d love to write a song with Jimmy Page or Billy Gibbons. It would be great to work with Mutt Lange… this list could go on forever..
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Let’s choose Loudpark Japan… because I haven’t been to Japan.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
There has never been a weird gift … fans have bought me beer and I think that’s the perfect gift.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Be yourself, make the most of your life and find joy in whatever it is that you do.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Bon Scott
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
I love the creativity and the endless possibilities ..
I hate playing venues that don’t have parking and have to carry loads of gear ..
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
The streaming royalty could be higher… I don’t think you will find any artist disagreeing with that.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
Judas Priest – Stained Class
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
They’re all good and serve a purpose, but vinyl is my favourite.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
Greystone Canyon had the honour of supporting The Rods and me. I personally played guitar for ex-Iron Maiden vocalist Paul Di’Anno on his last Australian tour.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Well, as being a musician doesn’t pay the bills, I’m already doing many other things… a day job, motocross, snowboarding ..
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
I assume you mean famous people. Hendrix, Randy Rhoads, Eddie Van Halen, Ozzy Osbourne and Lemmy.
What’s next for the band?
There will be a few more singles and music videos. The album will be released next month, and then in the new year, we will do a bunch of live shows
What Social Media / Website links do you use to get your music out to people?
Rockshots Records is the main source but we also have Facebook and Instagram to keep followers informed of what we are up to…

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?
It’s a Bap…. I lived and worked in the UK for many years … God Save the Queen!
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Thank you for the opportunity to get our name and hopefully our music out there… a warm hello and stay safe from down-under…
Kind Regards
Darren
